Wake Forest University has provided me with a wide array of experiences that have developed and refined various skills. Specifically, the university has improved my critical thinking and problem solving skills by completion in a Genetics Lab Course. The Genetics course consist of a lecture and lab portion. Personally, my skills were refined and honed in on in the lab section, where I partook in a semester long project to discover the missing gene in fruit flies. This process was long, and involved many steps. There was no set procedure, but more of a reaction to the specific results one received. This not so specific procedure showed I had a framework of thinking related to critical thinking and problem solving. I chose this experience because it challenged my critical thinking and problem solving skills. Continuously, this course made me improve on those skills.
By engaging in this experience, I learned I am resilient. I have the ability to fail, and still keep trying to find that correct answer. One wrong answer is not enough for me to give up, or call it the end. This mindset can definitely be applied to other areas of life. This experience enhanced my critical thinking and problem solving skills through allowing me to see that this skill must be used often and can always be improved for different subject areas. Every problem is not the same, so one should not treat it that way. When one can think about every problem differently I think they have an advantage over other individuals in the workforce. This information is important to employers because they know every problem is not the same; therefore, when they find an individual who is able to and will step out of the box to solve various problems the employer the individual is vital to that specific job, or company. Employers care if one has these skills because problems consistently arise on the job, and they want to know you can handle anything that comes your way. This proves in terms of my post-graduation professional and life skills that problems will arise, and I will have the necessary skills to solve them in an analytical and professional manner.
I can build upon this experience going forward to enhance my critical thinking and problem solving skills by continuing to refine these skills. I have to continuously challenge these skills for them to improve. I cannot be complacent with my skill, or it may lessen the quality of the skills. My current strengths are problem solving. I understand there is a solution for every problem, and I just have to find that right answer to get solve the problem and get the results I want. I would like to work on my critical thinking skills. This is one of those skills that will never be perfect because every problem or situation isn’t the same, but the skill can definitely allow you to work through problems in an efficient manner. I will communicate this with impact to an employer by stating my strengths and weaknesses, and where improvements were made to make my weakness a strength. I think it is important for employers to know you are human and are not perfect, but you are capable of getting past obstacles.
