Wake Forest University has provided me with a wide range of skills. As evidence for my communication literacy skills, I want to use the example of my work on a research project. This involved a short and lengthier presentation, as well as a written report. For this project, I worked in a scientific research lab for several months. The goal of my project was to determine the effect of methotrexate on camelid derived antibodies. To communicate my results I had to write a 20 page lab report and present my findings to several important figures through a PowerPoint. As a whole, this experience challenged my communication skills, but overall improved the quality of my skill in a written and oral manner. I was able to communicate scientific information in a latent form to non-science background individuals; therefore, my communication skills have definitely soared to new heights and proved my knowledge of communication literacy. I chose this specific experience because it gives me the opportunity to showcase more than one type of communication skill, such as written, oral, and digital.
From this experience, I have learned that communication skills have to continuously be refined and honed in on. Communication skills are only effective if the audience has a greater understanding of what you are trying to say or the point you are trying to get across. This experience enhanced my communication skills by allowing me to work on my written, oral, and digital skills all at once. This showed communication skills are much intertwined. These aspects are very important information for an employer or organization within my area of professional interest. Employers should care if you have communication literacy skills. These aspects allow one to do their job effectively and most efficient. Communication skills allow barriers to be broken between the presenter and audience. This experience proves I have the necessary skills to succeed in post-graduation professional and life skills.
In the future, I can build upon this experience to further enhance my communication literacy skills by consistently working on my written, oral, and digital communication. As said before, communication skills must be worked on consistently. It is something that is always changing and has to always be worked on. My current strengths are my digital communication. I like to think I am a professional at PowerPoint. My written communication definitely needs to be worked on. Is what I am writing match what I really to say? To an employer I would communicate this experience with impact by stating my strengths and weaknesses, and where improvements were made to make my weakness a strength.
